Baghel Singh in Delhi 1783




Giani Gian Singh describes the scene of Baghel Singh of the Karora Misal mounted up, riding alongside other Singhs, through Delhi in 1783.


ਆਪ ਬਘੇਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਗੇਸ ਚਢ੍ਯੋ ਗਜ ਤੁੰਗ ਕੀ ਪੀਠ ਪੈ ਮੱਧ ਅੰਬਾਰੀ ।

Baghel Singh mounted his tall elephant, sitting on the rear in a canopy.


ਔਰ ਸਭੈ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਚਲੇ ਚਢਿ ਫੀਲਨ ਪੈ ਮੁਦ ਧਾਰੀ ।

All the other countless Sardars mounted their elephants as well in great bliss.


ਚਾਮਰ ਚਾਰੁ ਢੁਰੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਊਪਰ ਸੀਸ ਜਿਗਾ ਕਲਗੀ ਛਬਿ ਭਾਰੀ ।

A beautiful whisk was flown around the head of the Singh leaders, who had adorned tiaras and plumes on their turbans.


ਭਾਟ ਨਕੀਬ ਚਲੇ ਜਸ ਬੋਲਤ ਬਾਦ ਬਜੈਂ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।138।

Going along with them bards were singing their praise with instruments in all sorts of varieties


ਘੋੜ ਚੜ੍ਹੇ ਬਹੁ ਸਿੰਘ ਚਢੇ ਸੰਗ ਆਯੁਧ ਅੰਗ ਮਢੇ ਸਭਿ ਕੋ ਹੈਂ ।

Many Singhs mounted their horses along with them, with weapons on every limb on their body looking so glorious


ਸੋਹਿਤ ਸੇਤ ਸਿਆਮ ਸਜੇ ਸੁਚ ਕੇਸਰੀ ਚੈਲ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਜੋ ਹੈਂ ।

They were dressed beautifully in white, dark blue, with some in kesri and yellow, all wearing silk clothing


ਬੀਰ ਬਨੈਤ ਪਟੈਤ ਕਟੈਤ ਬਲੀ ਬਡ ਬਾਂਕੁਰੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੋਹੈਂ ।

The swordsmen warriors were strapped to slice, the strong warriors looked so brilliant, lavish and glorious!


ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਪਾਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਸਭੈ ਨਰ ਨਾਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਮੋਹੈਂ ।139।

Everyone was infatuated looking upon their indescribable beauty, all the men and women were enthralled


ਭਾਵਤ ਅੱਸ੍ਵ ਕੁਦਾਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਛੈਲ ਛਕੇ ਛਬਿ ਛੁੰਗ ਛਬੀਲੇ ।

They were riding with their beloved horses so gloriously, all of these young dignified warriors


ਸੁੱਧ ਸਫਾਇ ਸਮੱਸ੍ਰੂ ਸੋਹਿਤ ਭੌਂਹ ਸੁ ਮੂਛਹਿਂ ਨੈਨ ਚਢੀਲੇ ।

Their straight and clean beards looked so magnificent, their eyebrows, mustaches and eyes were raised up so high!


ਫੀਮ ਸੁਖੇ ਗਹਿਰੇ ਸੁ ਛਕੇ ਫਹਿਰੈਂ ਫਰਰੇ ਸੇਤ ਪੀਤ ਰੁ ਨੀਲੇ ।

Drinking plentiful amounts of strong cannabis and consuming opium, the white, blue and yellow flags on their battle standards were waving so elegantly


ਮਾਨਹੁ ਮੈਨ ਮ੍ਰਿਗੇਸ ਬਘੇਲ ਬਿਸੇਸ ਪਰੇ ਨਿਜ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗੀਲੇ ।140।

It was as if Kamdevta [the God of Love], in the most beautiful manner, had himself took form as Baghel Singh.
