Duties of a Singh

ਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਸੈ ਸਤਵੰਜੈਂ ਸਾਲੈਂ । ਕਰਯੋ ਮਸੰਦਨ ਕਾ ਯਹਿ ਹਾਲੈਂ । ਪੁਨ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਿੰਘ ਫਿਰ ਕਰਹੀਂ । ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਗ੍ਯਾ ਅਨੁਸਰਹੀਂ ।੧੧੪।⁣

In the year 1757 Bikrami [1700 CE], the Guru [destroyed] the Masands. After that the Singhs would serve in all duties, every day they would perform these in accordance with the Guru's command. ⁣

ਪੋਸਤ ਭੰਗ ਅਫੀਮ ਸ਼ਰਾਬੈਂ । ਝਟਕ ਬੱਕਰੇ ਛਕੈਂ ਕਬਾਬੈ । ਖੇਲਹਿ ਨਿੱਤ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਅਪਾਰੇ । ਮਾਰਹਿਂ ਬਾਘ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਝੰਖਾਰੇ ।੧੧੫।⁣

[Consuming] poppy plants, cannabis, opium, and alcohol, they would decapitate [jhatka] goats, and eat kebabs. Everyday they would hunt endlessly, killing leopards, deer and elk. ⁣

ਬੀਸ ਪਚਾਸ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਵੈਂ । ਇਤ ਉਤ ਤੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਮਨ ਲੁਟ ਲ੍ਯਾਵੈਂ । ਦੂਰ ਦੇਸ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਂਹੀ । ਮਾਰਹਿਂ ਧਾਰੇ ਸੰਕਹਿਂ ਨਾਹੀ ।੧੧੬|

When twenty to fifty Singhs would meet together, they would roam around looting various towns. They would go great distances, into the heartland of the Turks, raiding them fearlessly.
