Poetic Praise of Guru Hargobind Sahib Maharaj - Gurpratap Suraj Prakash

⁣ Ferocious [like a tiger], you have taken form, as if Varha [Wild-Boar] avatar uplifting the world, you have come to protect the good. ⁣ Those contemplating upon His beautiful form arise true wisdom within and powerful intellect. ⁣ Gripping a spear You enter war with great fervor, penetrating slanderers with great pain. ⁣ Oh Guru Hargobind ! the compassionate and great warrior ! You are the sun removing the darkness overlaid on the world by the savages. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣In this beautiful meter, the Great Poet Santokh Singh uses a variety of literary devices to beautifully ornate his praise of Guru Hargobind Sahib. The word 'Soor' is used eight different times with all different meanings, this literary device is called Yamak Alankar. ⁣ ⁣ 1. Tiger⁣ 2. Varha Avatar⁣ 3. Form⁣ 4. Wise⁣ 5. Spear⁣ 6. Pain⁣ 7. Brave⁣ 8. Sun ⁣ ⁣ Santokh Singh also uses a literary device called Singhvalokan, here the beginning word is the same as the last word in the sentence for the entire meter. Please see older posts on Manglacharan for more detailed explanations on both these literary devices [Alankaras]. ⁣ ⁣ Gurpratap Suraj Prakash Granth [1843], author: the Great Poet Santokh Singh⁣ Raas 1, Chapter 1
