The Sikh Identity - Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji

At the young age of ten, Guru Gobind Singh has a discussion with a Sikh in Delhi who took care of Guru Tegh Bahadur's funeral rites. In discussion the Sikh from Delhi tells Guru Gobind Singh how no one came forward to claim the body. The Mughal commander had asked the gathering if anyone was a Sikh and the Sikh from Delhi explains to Guru Gobind Singh:

"No one had said, 'I am a Sikh', they all cowered back into their respective houses

In their hearts they were afraid and no one said anything, they thought, the Emperor will round them up and kill them. They all went away to their own houses, no one recognized themselves as Sikh. "

Listening to this Guru Gobind Singh roared, like thunder from a cloud, and said, "Now I will create such a Panth that will be greatly spread across the entire world

If all the world's people get together in one spot, and just one Sikh is amongst them, everyone will recognize that one [Sikh] different from them all; [My Sikh] will not be able to mix with the others

Just like how herons cannot hide amongst swans; Just like vultures amongst peacocks; like donkeys with a strong steed; Just like a tiger amongst a herd of deer

There are numerous types of identities but you will [always] be able to identify my Sikh
